Pregnancy Week 12

Week 12 of pregnancy is an important week in any woman’s pregnancy. In addition to indicating the end of your first trimester, it also signifies the completion of one of the most crucial stages in the growth and development of your baby. It is after three months of pregnancy when most women find it even more secure to reveal their good news to family and friends. The chances for miscarriage reduce considerably at this stage of the pregnancy, provided the mom-to-be eats right, works out properly, and remains healthy.

Your Body
Around this stage of your pregnancy, a big plus will be that your usual morning sickness will start to disappear. As you won’t be that big yet, you will probably be quite comfortable now. If this is your first pregnancy, you may be able to wear some of your regular clothes even now. On the other hand, if you have given birth before, you would have started to show the added weight already and will feel more comfortable wearing looser clothes, like maternity clothing.

During your pregnancy, several changes will happen in your skin, like stretching and hormonal changes. But before that, you will get that wonderful pregnancy glow, which everyone around you will start noticing. The color of your skin will change constantly due to the production of pigments by your melanin cells. If you are of color, then the chances of you experiencing changes in your skin color are high, making your skin lighter or darker than usual.

Pregnancy will usually make your skin dry and itchy. You can use moisturizers to keep your skin moist. Another solution is to take food items that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, like almonds, olive oil, and macadamia nuts. Fish is also a good source of fatty acids.

Your Baby
By this time, your baby will weigh around 8 to 14 grams and will measure about 2 and a half inches in length. Few of her structures will be formed after the completion of this week, and the structures that have already formed will continue to grow and develop. Her bones will be forming, toes and fingers would have separated by now, and nails will be growing. The small intestine of your baby will now be able to push food by way of the bowels, and it will also absorb sugar. Her nervous system would have developed more and her pituitary gland will also begin to function.

You should know that your baby will be able to swallow now, and she might also get hiccups! Some researchers claim that they can even identify variations in a baby’s personality, at this stage of pregnancy, like whether the baby will be a thumb sucker, calm or active, etc. Reflexes will be the most motions of your baby right now, and her muscles can now respond to her brain signals, causing her to curl her toes and kick.

Try your best not to get injured during pregnancy. It has been found that 6 to 7 percent of all pregnant women get injured. Therefore, it is important that you take immense care not to get injured during any stage of your pregnancy. Make sure that the clothes and shoes you wear are safe and comfortable. When you take the stairs, buses or escalators, use handrails for grip. Also, never forget to wear your seat belt whenever you're traveling in a car.
